This vibrant city blends French-speaking roots with bold music, rich storytelling, and a culture that doesn’t just celebrate life but dances through it. Originally settled by Acadians expelled from Canada in the 1700s, Lafayette has grown into a lively hub where traditions are preserved and passed down through generations.
The Canyon valleys of the Waimea River and its tributary were once heavily populated, and the town was an early center of native government. It was here that Captain James Cook, English Navigator-Explorer, made his first landing in the Hawaiian Islands on January 20, 1778. Waimea developed as a provisioning port for whalers and sandalwood traders. A ruined Russian fort, built (1815) in a futile attempt to seize the isle, occupies a coastal bluff aboe the Waimea River. The only coral island in the archipelago, Anegada is one of the British Virgin Islands and best known for its secluded beaches, extensive salt ponds, and nearly flat elevation which gave rise to the name Tierra Anegada, Spanish for "flooded land."
Although sparsely populated, Anegada's economy is based primarily on tourism, and secondly on commercial fishing. Visitors will find a number of rare or endangered species here: the Anegada rock iguana, Caribbean lobster, the loblolly tree, frangipani, feathery sea lavender and wild orchids.
Offshore, the 18-mile Horseshoe Reef is one of the world's largest coral reefs, making navigation difficult and causing numerous shipwrecks over the years.
