Cartagena is a port city on Spain’s southeastern Mediterranean coast, in the Region of Murcia, where a sheltered harbor is surrounded by hills and historic neighborhoods. Its strategic position has made it an important maritime center for successive civilizations, leaving an unusually rich archaeological and architectural landscape. The modern city combines a busy waterfront with a compact historic center, where Roman remains stand alongside military buildings and modernist architecture.
The capital, 450-year-old Asuncion ("Mother of Cities") merits a visit of unhurried nights - that way, you'll have time to sit in the main square and people-watch. The shopping in this grand city of 729,000 is the finest the country offers, and the cathedral and archaeological museum are both highlights. The governmental architecture is interesting; don't miss the Congressional Palace, Customs House and Government Palace (in the style of the Louvre).
Palm Desert is a city in California’s Coachella Valley, set between the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains and the Little San Bernardino Mountains. Its landscape is characterized by desert plains, palm trees, rugged mountain slopes, and irrigated areas created around residential neighborhoods and golf courses. El Paseo forms the city’s best-known commercial district, with shops, galleries, restaurants, and public art along a landscaped boulevard.
Volubilis is an extensive archaeological site in northern Morocco, located near the pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and surrounded by fertile farmland at the foot of Jbel Zerhoun. The ruins represent one of the country’s most important ancient urban sites, with temples, public buildings, residences, defensive walls, and elaborate mosaic floors spread across a broad hillside. Its location overlooking the surrounding agricultural plain helps explain the settlement’s importance.
Located off the coast of Ecuador, Floreana Island is one of the Galápagos Islands and a popular stop for gazing at a variety of wildlife, including Galápagos tortoises and flamingoes. Post Office Bay is home to the island chain's first post office site, originally established by visiting whalers in the 18th century. Though one of the smallest islands in the Galápagos, Floreana is well worth the trip!
Ipoh is the capital of Perak in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia, surrounded by limestone hills and a landscape shaped by the Kinta Valley. The city developed as a major center for tin mining, and remnants of that period remain visible in its historic buildings, streets, and former mining areas.
Kinosaki Onsen is a resort area best known for its hot springs (onsen) as well as its charming, nostalgic atmosphere: guests of the local ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) stroll between the seven public onsen wearing yukata (literally translated as "bathing cloth," a casual version of the kimono) and geta (wooden sandals). Other attractions of this quaint town include a temple appropriately named Onsenji, views from Mt Taishi accessed by a ropeway at the end of the main street, two museums, and numerous cafes serving local specialties such as snow crab, Tajima beef and onsen-boiled eggs.
