Leknes sits in the heart of Norway’s Lofoten Islands, a small town shaped more by geography than by long urban history. It developed as a regional hub for farming, fishing, and transport, serving surrounding villages spread across Vestvågøy. Rather than presenting a preserved past, Leknes reflects contemporary life in the north, practical and closely tied to seasonal rhythms.
Kuressaare is the main town of Saaremaa, Estonia’s largest island, set beside a sheltered bay on the island’s southern coast. The town is known for its compact historic center, seaside setting, and strong links with Saaremaa’s island culture. Kuressaare Castle dominates the waterfront, while streets lined with wooden houses, small parks, and 19th-century villas extend inland.
Mijas, perched on the hillside above the Costa del Sol, blends centuries of Andalusian tradition with views that stretch across the Mediterranean. The whitewashed buildings of Mijas Pueblo reflect sunlight from narrow cobbled streets that wind through small plazas, each with its own fountain, chapel, or overlook. The town’s layout still follows Moorish-era planning, and remnants of the old wall (La Muralla) offer shaded walks lined with native plants and panoramic views over the coast.
Killarney National Park occupies more than 10,000 hectares in County Kerry in southwest Ireland, surrounding lakes, mountains, woodland, waterfalls, and historic estates. Established as Ireland’s first national park, it includes Lough Leane, Muckross Lake, and Upper Lake, with the peaks of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks forming a dramatic backdrop. Much of the park is covered by native woodland, including areas of ancient oak forest and yew woodland.
Rathlin Island is Northern Ireland’s only inhabited offshore island, lying about six miles from the County Antrim coast across the Sea of Moyle. Its small community is centered around a harbor on the southern side, while much of the island consists of farmland, open hills, rocky shorelines, and sea cliffs. Rathlin has a notably remote character despite its short ferry journey from Ballycastle.
M’Hamid El Ghizlane sits deep in southeastern Morocco’s Sahara, where the paved road ends and endless sands begin. Travelers often arrive from Zagora, taking in the wide palm groves fed by ancient irrigation channels that show how people have sustained life here for centuries. At sunrise and sunset, the dunes glow with waves of gold and copper, offering unforgettable views few places on earth can match.
Les Saintes (also known as Iles des Saintes) are perfect for the kind of traveler who relishes unspoiled tropical beauty and the serenity that comes from doing next to nothing on a vacation, but doing it à la française. While Guadeloupe's bustling epicenter, Pointe-à-Pitre, is just a l5-minute plane hop away, it seems continents apart from the eight pristine volcanic dots that comprise Les Saintes. There are about 3,000 inhabitants in the islands. About half of them live on Terre-de-Haut where only a few dozen four-wheeled vehicles travel its roads. There is just one doctor, and his home, designed to resemble a ship's bow, is something of a local landmark.
